What is Color Vacuum?

Color Vacuum is an app that turns your mobile device into a fantastic machine to explore colors around you, search them and imagine new games where you set the rules.

Color Vacuum utilizes the device camera to sample and capture the colors.
The child can collect them observing how each color is made of small quantities of Red, Green and Blue. The colored bulbs and vials show the right amount.

When a color is captured, it floats under the glass, finding its place near similar colors.

Once enough colors are collected, the child can switch to Search Mode. In this play mode, you or your friends can search for the color you collected.
The Vacuum Mode is a harder way to search for collected colors. It requires adding and subtracting a little bit of color every time you tap the blue button in order to reach the goal.

In Color Vacuum there are no set rules to play, nor time limits. You create the game, its rules, where to play and for how long!

Color Vacuum is a Universal app for your iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad)

Who created Color Vacuum and why?

Color Vacuum was originally invented by Professor Viktor Vapori in late 1800s.

Vapori created many visionary machines that few people have seen or heard of. They were designed to illustrate concepts of science, math, art and nature to his 3 children.

The Color Vacuum machine was protected by an exquisite wood box and contained an handwritten letter from Professor Vapori to his children. In this letter Vapori described the machine, its intended use and the possible play modes.

Curious Hat has recently discovered these machines and we are now bringing them to the public in the form of mobile apps.

Instructions

There are 3 Modes to use Color Vacuum: Collect, Search and Vacuum.

You control them by turning the dial on the top left of the machine.

When the machine is OFF a mechanical help will appear under the glass.
The rotating hand and the text will guide you.
You can move to the next help panel by pressing the blue button.

Collect Mode

The goal of this mode is to explore the world of colors around you and to collect colors you like.

Let’s start by activating the electro-mechanical eye by pressing the ON button on the top left of the machine.

You will now see the world around you under the glass.

The color you are looking at is shown in the small circle on the arm.

Walk around exploring the colors around you.

Observe how the color you are looking at is made of 3 components, Red, Green and Blue, by watching the 3 vials filling up and emptying.

The 3 Red, Green and Blue lamps will tell you how much each component is passing through the tubes into the vials.

When you find a color you like, press the blue button on the bottom right of the machine.
The color will be vacuumed into the machine and will become a color bubble floating under the glass.

You can collect up to 25 colors. The counter will tell you how many you have so far.

If you look closely, you will notice how similar colors like to stick next to each other.
The more saturated is the color, the closer to the edge it will be and the bigger the bubble.

If you want to clear your current collection, press and hold the blue button for over a second. All the color bubbles will disappear and yo will start over.

When you are ready to find the colors collected so far, turn the dial and switch to Search mode.

Search Mode

The goal of this mode is to find the colors collected so far.

Let’s start by activating the electro-mechanical eye by pressing the ON button on the top left of the machine.

The colors you collected will still float under the glass.

The small square on the arm will show you the color to look for.
The small circle on the arm will still show you the color you are looking at.

Search the color around you. Even if you are playing by yourself, it will not be so easy to find it again.

The 3 arrows on the vials will tell you the right level of Red, Green and Blue you are looking for.

Take a look at the 5 lamps on the right side of the machine. They will tell you how close you are to the solution.
When you see the green light on the fifth lamp, you have a match!

Press the blue button and match the color!

Every time you find a color, it will disappear from under the glass and the counter will decrease.

Once you have found all the colors previously collected, the counter will tell you the number of seconds it took to find them all.

If you ever get stuck and cannot find the color, press and hold for over a second the blue button and a new color to search will appear in the square.

Vacuum Mode

The goal of this mode is to find the colors collected so far but it is harder than in Search Mode.

Check the status of the red switch. IN means that you will absorb some color, OUT means that you will expel some.

In this mode every time you press the blue button, a little bit of color will be absorbed or expelled by the machine.

You have to keep adding and removing Red, Green and Blue until you get to the right level.
This requires coordination and patience!

Look around and find colors that contain mostly Red, Green or Blue. This way it will be easy to solve the puzzle!

If you ever get stuck and cannot find the color, press and hold for over a second the blue button and a new color to search will appear in the square.

Once you have found all the colors previously collected, the counter will tell you the number of seconds it took to find them all.
